- Coastal Lifesaving: Shaw and Partners World Ocean Series Hossegor Classic 2025
Mila Laroche 📅 Date: July 12–13, 2025 📍 Location: Hossegor (Central Beach & Surf Lifesaving Area) Organized by Shaw and Partners World Ocean Series in collaboration with local surf lifesaving clubs ( Hossegor Lifesaving Club , FFSS certified lifeguards) and equipment partners ( Ocean Perf, Mellow Sea ). The pinnacle of competitive coastal lifesaving sports! Pre-Race: Immersion and Recon I arrived early at the heart of the competition zone in Hossegor. I set up my gear: Sony A9 with 24–70mm lens in my hands, and my Ikelite waterproof housing ready. As a specialized aquatic photographer in coastal lifesaving and open-water swimming, I prepared for the rolling waves, shifting sunlight, and unpredictable athlete trajectories. The beach gradually came alive: athletes putting on their lycras, prepping their surf skis and paddle boards , warming up for the races. The crowd settled. After a few shots from the sand, I entered the water with fins on, just a few meters from the start line, ready to capture what the spectators on the beach could not see. The light was soft, and the water gently stirred: a perfect setup for intense series ahead. Strategic Positioning in the Water Positioning is everything: between heats, I stay alert to the movements, anticipating the typical lifesaving transitions : PADDLE-SWIM-KAYAK/SURF-SKI . I anticipate waves, reflections, the final sprint, and the position of key athletes. Every angle is an opportunity to capture the sport’s technique and emotion. Event Format and Stakes The Hossegor stage is the first European stop of the World Ocean Series, a prestigious event featuring a 5,000m (short-distance) but very intense format, combining surf race, board race, ski race, oceanman/oceanwoman, and open-water swimming . With points for international rankings, prize pools, and the “MVP” multi-event title at stake, the tension was palpable. As an aquatic photographer, I knew the event would be demanding: rapid lighting changes, turbulent water, ultra-reactive athletes, and multiple event transitions that multiply visual opportunities. Thais Delrieux Technical Challenges in the Water Being immersed among athletes is active work. The Sony A9 delivers high-speed bursts to freeze droplets, faces, boards, and kayaks in motion. My Ikelite housing is solid but heavy in choppy water. Conditions at Hossegor: rolling swells, coastal currents, intersecting waves. I position myself just after the start line, then move toward buoy turns, where the energy peaks. I must also return quickly to the final straight before the finish. Typical lifesaving moments include PADDLE-SWIM transitions, SWIM-SURF SKI sequences, and Oceanman sweeps . Between precise gestures (paddling, board handling, tight turns) and spontaneous emotions (effort, smiles, camaraderie), every shot tells a story of a demanding, human sport. Piran Phillips Anecdote: Mid-Race Magic : Midway through, between a ski series and a board race, an athlete adjusted their trajectory atop a wave. Water splashed onto my housing; I fired the shutter without fully seeing the frame. Technical skill met emotion: the athlete signaling me, the wave lifting them, sunlight illuminating Hossegor beach—a perfect frozen moment Coastal Lifesaving Event Results Oceanman Final Bob Whittaker This multi-discipline test challenged endurance and versatility: Jules Fredonnet (Capbreton) – 1st Bob Whittaker (UK) – 2nd Mael Tissier (Hossegor Lifesaving Club) – 3rd Jules dominated, claiming the decisive victory. Capturing their performances showcases the beauty and intensity of coastal lifesaving sports. The Unique Setting of Hossegor Hossegor is more than a competition: it’s a majestic backdrop. Pine trees, dunes, Atlantic swells, golden sand, and passionate local lifesaving clubs. From the water, my perspective is rare: I capture the race, spectators, flags, tents, buildings, and sunlight reflections on the sea. Nikita Nijssen Seran My favorite shot? An athlete in a surf ski kayak sprinting toward the finish line , mere meters from my housing—practically brushing my shoulder. This photo captures the essence of coastal lifesaving and the variety of disciplines athletes face in competition. It’s a whole community in motion offshore. Gratitude to Athletes & Organizer Santxo Etcheverry When I get in the water, I never know what will happen: whether you’ll come close, wave, or smile. But one thing is certain: I feel at home beside you, sometimes even on your trajectory. You’ve sent me many thanks for the images, but in truth, I am infinitely grateful to you . Elise Daudignon I spend hours alone waiting between heats, but when you arrive, I feel like I’m racing with you, at the heart of the action. Thank you to all the coastal lifesaving athletes of the World Ocean Series for sharing these moments. If the photos are striking, it’s because it’s a team effort . Can’t wait to see you again! - My Biarritz Swim Crossing 2025 Edition
Date: June 21, 2025 — Location: Port-Vieux, Biarritz The calm before the swell It’s 8 a.m. when I arrive at Port-Vieux . The sun slowly settles over the rocks, and the ocean is already breathing. I greet the organizers from Biarritz Olympique Natation , wave to the swimmers I know, and scan the sea to find my angles.Wetsuit zipped up, fins adjusted, pink cap on my head — I’m ready to dive into their race. The water feels perfect for late June, but I know I’ll be in it for hours. My wetsuit becomes my best ally: keeping me warm, helping me float, and saving me a few bruises when the jet ski takes me back to the front of the race. From the surface, everything looks peaceful. But just minutes before the start , the contrast is striking: swimmers are warming up, focused, fixing their goggles , waiting for the signal.I’m already in the water, floating in front of them, camera in hand, ready to capture what the beach can’t see. The big plunge The starter sounds. In a heartbeat, the calm breaks. A human wave rushes forward: sand flying, water splashing, hearts racing. The Port-Vieux explodes with life. Bodies jump, dive, collide. Sunlight turns them into golden silhouettes. It’s pure energy, a joyful chaos. From the shore, you hear cheers. From the water, only bubbles and breath. Between swell and horizon Once again this year, the swell joined the party, milder than last year, but still tricky. From water level, the buoys vanish behind waves , and I sometimes lose track of the swimmers. Some drift with the current , others swim close, eyes locked ahead, and that’s when the magic happens. My jet ski pilot, Thomas, takes me to the front of the race, or at least, that’s the plan! This time, between Roche Plate and Boucalot, he forgot me! So I swam 2000 meters with one arm (the other holding my 6kg camera housing) to get back to Port-Vieux. A small personal challenge… and a big laugh later. A postcard in motion Photographing the Biarritz Swim Crossing feels like swimming through a living postcard: the Rock of the Virgin , the Casino , the Hôtel du Palais , the carved cliffs, the Boucalot , the Grand Caritz … Every angle reveals another side of this iconic city. From the sea, it’s a rare privilege, to be right there, in the heart of the blue ballet. My favorite shots? The one showing the whole Grande Plage in the background. And a portrait of a young swimmer, calm, focused, determined, perfectly in tune with the ocean . The finish and the celebration The finish line stands where it all began, under the arch set on the Port-Vieux beach, watched by the visitors on the Rock of the Virgin .One by one, swimmers emerge from the ocean, exhausted, radiant, victorious. The speaker calls their names, music plays, applause echoes. Volunteers from BO Natation offer refreshments, and the lifeguards from Biarritz Sauvetage Côtier keep watch until the very end. Three years of connection and complicity "Hi Marc !" “Hey Margaux!” It’s my third edition , and something has changed. Swimmers now know who I am: not “the girl with the weird box,” but their photographer in the water. Some recognize me mid-race, take a second to wave, to smile. These little gestures mean the world. The Biarritz Swim Crossing, to me, is all about connection , sharing , and challenge . Thank you all 💙 For your smiles, your waves, your trust. Sorry to those I missed, sometimes a wave got in the way. But I’ll be there again next year. - In the Heart of the Lake. Immersion at the POP Triathlon of Guiche (May 24–25, 2025)
When dawn breaks over Lake Arroques, the surface turns into a quiet mirror. The air is fresh, the light still soft; soon, the sun caresses the trees around the lake and paints the water a deep green. I dove into this atmosphere to photograph what the shore cannot see: the effort, the sudden breaks of movement, the focused faces, the splashes of water that tell the story of a race. Location & Date : Lake Arroques — May 24 & 25, 2025 Organizer : AEvents Bask Coast A sensory dive: why being in the water changes everything Being an aquatic photographer means embracing a disruptive point of view. From the shore, athletes are just moving dots; in the water, they are presences, trajectories, breaths. The clear, clean waters of Lake Arroques offered me an incredible visual palette: green reflections from the trees, shimmering surface, sunlight piercing through arms and droplets. With no jet ski to move around, every placement had to be mentally prepared: my 4-kg housing doesn’t let me “follow” swimmers for long distances. I anticipated starts and turns, looking for angles where the light would tell the story. Between two races, I’d get out of the water, dry my gear, offload memory cards, and start sorting — because athletes want their photos quickly, and the work doesn’t stop when the race ends. Highlights of the triathlon: adrenaline, poetry… and water slides The start is always my favorite moment: the rush, the density of the group charging forward, bodies overlapping for a few seconds, splashes flying at me. Impressive, a little scary, utterly thrilling. That’s when the pictures come alive: movement, raw chaos, pure emotion. The turns around the buoys : where trajectories cross, where you catch the determined eyes, the arms breaking through the surface, the tension condensed in one point. The calm between waves of athletes : when the water flattens again, breaths resonate, light shifts its tone. These moments bring more contemplative, sensitive images. The “duo” race from the slides : during one event, the duo format started right from POP’s water slides. Imagine: creative dives, cannonballs, angels, bombs — a parade of jumps literally landing in my direction. They transformed a simple start into an explosive ballet: improbable angles, suspended silhouettes, spectacular splashes. For me, it was a festival of snapshots — fun, bold, full of life, perfectly embodying the festive and family spirit of the event. Technical challenges & artistic choices Limited mobility : with a heavy housing, placements are fixed and require precise anticipation. Once the race starts, I can’t change my spot. Light : backlight creates powerful silhouettes but demands careful exposure to keep details. I love playing with changing light within the same race to give variety and artistic depth. Speed of movement : fast shutter speed and reliable autofocus are key to freezing arms and droplets without losing grace. A true challenge when swimmers arrive in packs. Post-production : offloading cards, quick sorting on site, then editing (contrast, colors, managing highlights of sunlight on water). What I keep in memory At the POP Triathlon of Guiche, it’s not just about performance: it’s about the bond between athlete and environment. The lake becomes a partner in the effort. It sculpts the light, sometimes soothes the scene, explodes with energy at the start. My images aim to reveal this connection: strength, elegance, humor (thanks to the slides!), and the simple beauty of a sporting moment in nature. Invitation & practical info If you want your event to be captured from this unique perspective — immersed, close, alive — I’m available for aquatic reportages during competitions, trainings, or private sessions. 👉 To discover my galleries → click here And see you back in Guiche on May 30–31, 2026!
- Bubble of happiness
In the ocean’s womb, time seems to stay, Each fleeting second drifts gently away. In the deep blue, every motion is grace, A peaceful dance in this endless space. Softly, the bubbles are rising above, Carrying whispers of moments we love. They burst at the surface, light as the air, Fleeting delights, too fragile to spare. Here in the hush of the water’s embrace, Time turns to velvet, slow in its pace. And we are reminded, in waves so sincere, That joy often dwells in what disappears. Inside this bubble, the world fades apart, What truly matters lives deep in the heart. Peace is the treasure the ocean bestows, In silence profound, where eternity flows. #SuspendedTime #UnderwaterBliss #MagicMoment
- Our scars
On or beneath the skin, every scar is a story. ⚡️ An indelible trace telling of a moment, a pain, a victory. These lines carved into our flesh are not mere marks. They are testimonies — proof that we have lived, that we have loved, that we have suffered, and above all, that we have healed. ⚡️⚡️ There are visible scars, the ones you can trace with your fingertips, and the hidden ones, tucked away in the corners of our soul. The first draw the gaze, the second blend into silence. Yet all whisper the same truth: we are shaped as much by our falls as by our flights. Each scar is a lesson. A frayed border between past and present, between who we were and who we have become. They murmur that pain can shape as much as it can destroy, that time is a patient sculptor. They remind us nothing is ever lost. Every wound transforms into strength, every fracture becomes a golden thread in our existence. 💫 If life is a stormy sea, then our scars are the linesthat trace our path. They guide us, protect us,and sometimes, reveal hidden beauty within hardship.Let us not fear our scars. They are proof we’ve braved the tempests, and that, despite it all,we still dance with the waves. 🌊 #ScarsTellStories #HealingJourney #StrengthInPain #GoldenThreads #DanceWithTheWaves
- The Christmas Swim of the White Bears of Biarritz: An Unmissable Tradition!
Every year in Biarritz, a unique event brings together the brave and the passionate: the White Bears’ Christmas Cup. This moment of pushing one’s limits and festive celebration has become a true institution on the Basque coast. As an underwater photographer, I’ve had the chance to capture this tradition from an original and immersive perspective. Here’s my take on this exceptional event. The White Bears’ Christmas Swim: A Unique Basque Tradition For several decades, the White Bears’ Christmas Swim in Biarritz has attracted locals and visitors alike, all ready to dive into the Atlantic Ocean, no matter the temperature. This tradition is much more than just a cold plunge—it embodies the warmth and festive spirit unique to the region. The participants, each more enthusiastic than the next, create a joyful and vibrant atmosphere that warms the heart despite the chilly water. Among the highlights are the gathering on the beach, the lively marching band providing musical cheer, the loud countdown, and then the collective dash toward the waves. Each plunge is met with joyful shouts and bursts of laughter—a scene that is both invigorating and heartwarming. A Photographic Challenge in an Exceptional Setting Photographing this event is an adventure in itself. The cold water, the swell, the currents, the rocks, the winter light, and the constant movement of the participants all present unique challenges. My goal was to capture not only the energy and determination of the swimmers, but also the natural beauty of the ocean and the iconic Port-Vieux of Biarritz in winter, watched over by the protective gaze of the Virgin on her Rock. For this project, I used a camera with a wide-angle lens and a waterproof housing, ideal for shooting in the water. The strong swell and currents made the task truly difficult. On top of that, being in the middle of a hundred swimmers added another level of complexity. I tried to photograph as many participants as possible, but they were everywhere—above and below the waves. The Result: Images That Tell a Story Each snapshot from this event tells a story. Among my favorite photos are those of the start, with swimmers hesitating between running straight in or slowly stepping into the water. Then there’s another one where a swimmer takes a moment to stop and give me a big smile, despite the cold that would make most people pull funny faces. These moments, both intimate and universal, capture the power of the present. Another striking image captures groups of participants wearing pink caps for the flipper race and green caps for the race without flippers. They all launched into the waves together. They shouted to me, “It’s chaos, they’re everywhere!” through joyful bursts of laughter. The solidarity and collective joy shine through every detail of these images and are etched in my memory. The Biarritz Polar Bears ’ Christmas Swim is much more than a tradition: it’s an experience that brings people together, awakens the senses, and inspires. As an underwater photographer, I was honored to capture these unique moments and share them with you. Thank you to the Polar Bear crew for welcoming me like one of the family. If this event sparks your curiosity, I invite you to experience it for yourself or explore more of my work through my galleries and social media . And if you’d like to immortalize your own aquatic adventures, don’t hesitate to get in touch!
